Another
week when weather conditions were not conducive to
being out fishing, but for those who braved the
elements the fishing was very good. With Swanswater
being quite exposed to the strong winds, the small
ponds once again came into their own and provided
shelter and sport for several anglers. Although the
fish in these ponds are slightly smaller than those
in Swanswater they are of the same top quality.
Also some anglers enjoy taking advantage of the
fact that catch and release is allowed here. As has
been the case for a few weeks big numbers of
“average” size fish were landed, and this is
reflected in the catch returns. Dancers, Damsels,
Cat’s Whiskers and Cormorant were the favourite
patterns with a few fish also being taking on
Snatchers and Black Spider, especially from the
small ponds. Amongst those doing well this week
were Alec Neil, Alva, 5 for 15lb
including 6lb 4oz Rainbow from the
Meadow Pond, and a Blue Allan McLachlan, Plean, 5lb
8oz Rainbow Tom McCormack, Tullibody, 3

The
weather was definitely the winner towards the end of the
week with the severe gales and heavy rain overnight on
Thursday night making Swanswater virtually unfishable on
Friday. Conditions improved slightly by Saturday
morning but the water was still very high and the
fishing was not easy. Fortunately the small ponds,
being more sheltered, were not so badly affected and
continued to produce a good number of fish, as they had
done all week. Early in the week plenty of fish were
being caught, on Dancers, Damsels, Buzzers and
Bloodworms, although there was nothing big to report.
One angler was even having some tremendous sport on the
Millpond using a Snatcher. Amongst those catching their
limit this week were:
Dennis Lennon, Airdrie, 5 for 13lb including
a Blue
Peter Bryce, Alloa, 5 for 12lb 12oz
Sandy Ireland, Lochgoilhead, 5 for 12lb 8oz
Davy Thomson, Alva, 5 for 12lb
Harry Seton, Clydebank, 5 for 11lb 8oz
including a Blue
Allan McLachlan and son, Chris, shared 5 for 10lb

Another excellent week's sport at
Swanswater with many anglers taking their limits.
Although the weather was unpredictable with
temperatures rising and falling almost daily and
some heavy rain and strong winds, the fishing was
very good and over 330 fish were caught. As has
been the case for some weeks, small lures fished on
intermediate lines were doing best with the usual
favourite patterns - Yellow Dancer, Damsel,
especially Hot Head, and Cat's Whisker - taking most
of the fish although Buzzers, Cormorant and
Hog-louse were also attracting a good number. For
much of the week a large proportion of the fish
caught were in the channel along the front of the
island, but they were moving around and were also
being caught in the dam area and the far bay.The best bag of the week was taken by
Davy Thomson, Alva, with 5 for 22lb 12oz
including Rainbows at 8lb 2oz and 7lb 8oz
Amongst other good bags this week
were: Scott Barnes, Balloch, 4 for
16lb 8oz including 9lb 10oz Rainbow Jim Allan, Kilsyth, 4 for 15lb
8oz including 8lb 4oz Rainbow Bill Dawson, Stirling, 4 for

With the weather going from gale
force winds and torrential rain to very hard frost
it might be thought that the fishing would suffer
but it was very good this week with nearly 300 fish
caught despite the stormy conditions and high water
levels. Most were taken on small lures with the
usual patterns - Yellow Dancer, Hot-head Damsel and
Cat's Whisker - the favourites, although other
patterns and colours were also doing well including
a variety of Black and Green or Pink lures. The
fish were well spread out round the ponds though
there were hot spots, including the channel between
the island and the roadside, and, at certain times,
the far bay beside the walkway. When the
temperature took a dramatic dip on Friday night, the
aerators kept conditions ice-free and while water
levels were high after the midweek storms, Wednesday
was the only day that the water was particularly
dirty. One double figure Rainbow was
landed this week. Ethan Mayall, Glenrothes,
took a lovely 10lb 6oz specimen on a
black andgreen lure.Other good catches includedJohn McCormick, Bannockburn,

It
was a good start to the New Year for those anglers
who braved the cold snowy conditions at Swanswater.
Even when it was snowing heavily on Thursday there
were plenty of fish taking and many anglers took
their bag limits. The wind and rain on Saturday,
while clearing the remaining snow, slowed the
fishing a little but the water remained fairly clear
and the fish were still taking. Some days the fish
were moving up and down the channel between the
island and the road side making this area and the
deeper central area covered by the boats the hot
spots, although fish were being taken all round the
ponds. Yellow Dancer, Hot-head Damsel, Cat's
Whisker, Cormorant, and Buzzers were the most
successful patterns. Dennis Lennon, Airdrie, had three
very successful outings in the boat ending up
with 15 for 46lb 15oz including 7lb
13oz Blue, 7lb Rainbow and 3 Blues.
Others doing well this week included Gordon Smith, Lesmahagow, 8lb
12oz Rainbow Simon Thomson, Falkirk, 3 for
12lb including 7lb 14oz Rainbow George Rose, Perth, 4 for 14lb
8oz including 7lb 8oz Rainbow Grant Smith, Stirling, 3 for

The
fishing was very good for most of the week, the only
exception being a consequence of the heavy rain on
Thursday and Friday with the resulting dirty water
making things a bit more difficult. However the ponds
quickly cleared and the fishing improved again at the
weekend. Damsel, Dancer, Cat’s Whisker, Cormorant,
Buzzers and Bloodworm were the favourite patterns this
week, and the best tactic was and intermediate line with
a slow retrieve.
The Boxing
Day Competition was very successful with the 35
participants landing a total of 84 fish and several
competitors bagging up. The winner was Gordon Barron,
Falkirk. Runner up was James Elliott, Stirling, and
Grant McCauley, Clydebank, was third. The Raffle along
with donations, and tea/coffee money over the year
raised £1250.00, which will be matched by the Diageo
Foundation making a total of £2500.00 for Strathcarron
Hospice. Many thanks to all those who bought tickets,
and donated prizes or money, particularly FMTC, Angling
Centre Stirling, Alan Buchan, Alec Peachey of Kinnears
in Scone and Jim Donnelly of Diageo. Thanks also to
all those who took part on the day and to Rab Don for
his usual excellent job as referee.Amongst the

Most of the week the fishing was excellent with the
fish generally sitting fairly deep in the water and
taking a variety of lures, including Dancer, Damsel,
and Cat’s Whisker. Buzzers, Bloodworm and PTN were
also taking fish. On the very cold days the fish
were slightly more difficult to find and a very slow
retrieve was needed. Thanks to the aerators the
ponds remain ice free and the fishery will be open
8.00am to 4.00pm every day except Christmas and New
Year’s Days. Angus Auchinachie, Falkirk, 2 for 11lb

Another
good week's fishing with the fish surprisingly near
the surface despite the cold weather. Most fish
were taken in the top three feet of water and many
were taken on nymphs such as Diawl Bach and Pheasant
Tail. The water temperature was fairly stable at 6oC
all week and the fish were well spread out round the
ponds. On Swanswater some days they were taking in
the channel and roadside areas, other days the dam
was the hotspot. Most of the time the fish were
round the margins of the pond, but there were
occasions when they went out into the middle and the
boats were doing well. Three Rainbows just under
the 10lb mark were taken this week and plenty of
superb Blues are still figuring in the catch
returns. Alan Giebler, Tullibody, 4 for

The water remains clear at Swanswater
despite the heavy rain, strong winds and snow that
have featured this week. The fishing continues to
be very good with the fish well spread out round the
pond and still in the top 2 to 3 feet. The water
temperature rose a little midweek but then dropped
again towards the weekend but this did not seem to
affect either the position of the fish or their
desire to take a wide variety of flies, mostly lures
but also a few nymphs. Yellow dancer, Damsel, Cat's
Whisker, Buzzer, Bloodworm, Cormorant, Diawl Bach
and Viva were amongst the most successful patterns
this week. One double figure Rainbow was taken
along with several superb fish in the 6lb to 9lb

Another good week’s fishing at
Swanswater. Over the course of the week the water
temperatures rose a couple of degrees and this
slight increase made the fish more actively look for
feed and therefore go for a large variety of flies.
Lures, especially the usual Cat’s Whisker, Yellow
Dancer and Hot-head Damsel, Buzzers, Bloodworm,
nymphs, including Damsel and Montana, and even
Hoppers have been catching fish this week. Fish
were being taken all over the ponds with no
particular hot spots although the area behind the
islands and the overflow were proving popular at
certain times. Some cracking 5lb to 9lb Rainbows
were taken this week with the biggest one just under
double figures.
Peter Baranowski, Bridge of
Allan, took the biggest fish of the week a
9lb 12oz Rainbow Other good catches included
Douglas Cullens, Tillicoultry, who took an
8lb 15oz Rainbow Mark Watson, Fishcross, 4 for

Plenty of fish were landed this week
and although there were not many “big “ bags, there
were also very few blanks. All three ponds
continue to fish well and are producing some top
quality Rainbows and Blues. Most fish are now
being taken on lures, Dancer, Damsel, Ace of Spades
and Cat, being the favourite patterns, with some
also taking Bloodworm and Buzzers.
This week’s luckiest angler was Andy Wilson from
Tillicoultry, who when out in the boat on Friday
morning and suffering from really cold hands, hooked
a fish and let go of his rod. After circling in the
boat for a while and almost giving up hope, he
spotted the handle of his rod and managed to catch
the line. To everyone’s amazement, the fish was
still hooked and was safely played and landed! Ronnie Codona, Glasgow, took the
only double figure fish this week, a 10lb
10oz Rainbow in his 3 for 16lb 2oz,
which also included 2 Blues Alec Neil, Alva, 3 for 14lb

Another excellent week’s fishing with
plenty of good bag limits being taken. The fish are
very active all over the water and being taken on
small lures fished on a floating or intermediate
line. If there was any “hot-spot” it was the area
behind the islands although the boats were also
doing well which shows how well spread out the fish
are at present. Dancer, Damsel, Cat’s Whisker and
various Fritz patterns were the favourite lures,
with Buzzers also taking fish, and small wet flies
such as Kate McLaren and Black Spider doing well on
the small ponds where the fish are keener to come up
to the surface. Several fish in the 5lb to 9lb
range were landed along with the usual selection of
quality Rainbows and Blues. Ian Borland, Renfrew, took the
biggest fish of the week, a 9lb 4oz Rainbow Robert Paton, Stirling, 9lb

An excellent week’s fishing, with
well over 400 fish landed. Many anglers bagged up
without too much difficulty and several went on to
catch and release on the small ponds while others
bought another ticket and often bagged up again.
The fish were well spread out over the ponds and
looking for feed in the top few feet of water. The
colder weather has diminished the natural fly life
and the fish are happy to take a wide variety of
small lures and nymphs. Damsel, especially one with
a hot-head, Dancer, Cat’s Whisker, Montana,
Bloodworm and Buzzers were the favourite patterns
with fish also taking small CDCs and other dries on
the small ponds. One double figure Rainbow and one
just under the 10lb mark feature in this week’s
returns. Gary McDonald, Tillicoultry, 5

After
a poor start to the week the fishing improved
greatly and by the middle of the week it was
exceptionally good. The continuing mild conditions
have seen the fish still near the top of the water
and being caught all round the ponds. The
shallower area behind the islands was a bit of a hot
spot as the water temperature actually rose a couple
of degrees. Geoff Gilbert, on holiday from the
Isle of Man, had an excellent week finishing up with
28 for 76lb 12oz including 21 Blues.
Although there were no double figure fish landed
this week a good number in the 5lb to 9lb range
were taken. Bob Garvie, Lennoxtown, took the
biggest fish of the week in his 2 for 11lb

As the week went on and the
temperatures rose, the fishing improved. By the end
of the week when it was very mild for the time of
year, the fish were moving freely about the water
and being taken just under the surface. Small
nymphs such as Damsel, Diawl Bach, PTN, Hare's Ear
and Montana, fished on a floating or intermediate
line, were the most successful patterns. The usual
small lures - Cat's Whisker and various coloured
Dancers - were also catching fish. Some anglers
were even having success with dry flies on the small
ponds. Clackmannan angler, Dougie
Taylor, had the best bag of the week with 5
for 16lb 8oz from the Millpond, including
8lb Rainbow and 3 Blues George Kochanek, Tulibody, took
the biggest fish from Swanswater in his 3 for

The cold snap in the middle of the
week improved the fishing as the fish became more
active. As the air temperature climbed after the
frosty night fish were seen moving all over the
surface of the water. A floating or intermediate
line fished with small gold head nymphs was the best
method, although fry patterns were also working well
especially on the small ponds. Damsel, Hare’s Ear,
Diawl Bach, and Montana were the favourite nymphs
with Ace of Spades, Dancer and Viva the favourite
lures. A good number of 5lb to 9lb fish were landed
this week and several anglers reported seeing,

The
continuing mild weather means the fish are still
high in the water and still occasionally taking dry
flies. More often however nymphs, buzzers and small
lures, such as Damsel, PTN, Diawl Bach, Hare’s Ear
and Dancer, were tempting them. Although the brown
trout season is now finished there is still a good
variety of trout available with Rainbows, Blues and
Golds still featuring in the catch returns. Over
the season nearly 1500 Browns were landed with an
average weight of around 3lb. Many big browns in
the 5lb to 7lb range were landed with the heaviest
of the season being a cracking 7lb 8oz taken by Gary
Waugh in June.

Another week of dropping water
temperature and calm weather, saw another week of
good fishing. With fish now starting to head to the
shallower water they were more widespread around
Swanswater, although on the brighter days at the end
of the week, fish were in the deeper water, being
caught about 4 feet down. Best results were on Hot
Head Damsel, Dancer, Minkie, PTN and Diawl Bach. Some excellent bags have been
recorded with some lovely fish from 6lb to 8lb being
taken. Best bags were: Jim Allan, Kilsyth, 4 for 16lb

The fishing improved as the week went
on and the more settled weather became
established. Plenty of fish were seen moving on
the surface of the water and most were being taken
in the top few feet. Rainbows to 7lb, Blues to 6lb
6oz and Browns up to 4lb were all recorded in this
week's best catch returns. Favourite flies this
week were Cormorant, Damsel, Dancer, Diawl Bach, PTN
and Buzzers, with occasional fish still being taken
on dry flies such as Daddy Long Legs and
Klinkhammer. All three ponds continue to produce
superb quality fish including two of the biggest
Rainbows of the week from the Meadow Pond. Good bags this week included: Willie McPherson, Greenock,
7lb Rainbow from the Meadow Pond Sean Bruce, Montrose, 2 Blues

With the drop in temperature the fish
have been taking slightly deeper and although they
are still to be seen actively moving around the
surface, the best results have been with small lures
fished on an intermediate line. Favourite patterns
this week were Damsel, Dancer, Cat’s Whisker, and
Ace of Spades. Also catching were nymphs such as
Hare’s Ear, Diawl Bach and Corixa and Buzzers. At
the end of the week anything with a red-head was
doing extremely well. More rainbows are now
appearing in the catch returns along with the blues
which have been featuring over the past few weeks.
Late season Browns are still being caught and the
Goldies continue to be popular especially in the
small ponds. Although there were no really big fish taken this
week there were some excellent bags including: Allan Weir, Plean, 7lb
14oz Rainbow Gavin Hosie, Alloa, 7lb 8oz

Another week of changing weather,
caused anglers to change tactics several times to
locate the fish. During the calm overcast spells
the fish were feeding in the top couple of feet of
water. Anglers were seeing plenty of surface
activity, with fish rising to Daddies and Hoppers.
On the brighter, windier days the fish were going
slightly deeper, with best results on Hot Head
Damsel, Cormorant, Hare's Ear and Montana. Buzzer
and Bloodworm were also proving to be effective.
The biggest fish featured in the
catch returns this week was caught by lady angler
Petrina Williams, and weighed 8lb 4oz. Petrina Williams, Alloa, 8lb

A good week at Swanswater with the fish
feeding near the top of the water except during the very
bright spells when they went deeper. Buzzers, Muddlers,
Sedges, Damsel, Daddy, Kate McLaren, Invicta and Dancer
were this week's favourite patterns, depending on
weather conditions. As a large proportion of the fish
being stocked at present are blue trout, these top
quality hard fighting fish figure prominently in the
catch returns. Many are standard stocking size but some
are a lot bigger and there are also a good number of
bigger Rainbows being stocked along with Goldies and
Browns. One superb double figure Rainbow was landed
this week, weighing 14lb, along with some lovely fish in
the 5lb to 8lb range. Joe Potts, Inchinnan, took the
biggest fish of the week in his 5 for 24lb
including 14lb Rainbow and 4 Blues Other good catches included Peter

Plenty of great sport at Swanswater
this week with the fish still generally in the top
two feet of the water and still coming up to dry
flies such as Hoppers, Daddies, Mayfly and Sedges.
Fish were seen moving all over the ponds and anglers
were getting some superb follows and takes. Later
in the week the wind affected the depth at which the
fish were lying and during the windy periods they
were taking slightly deeper on wet flies -
Cormorants, Bibio, Invicta and Dunkeld being the
favourites, and nymphs especially Caddis, Diawl
Bach, Damsel and Hare’s Ear. Although there were
no really big fish landed there were a good number
of Rainbows, Blues and Browns in the 5lb to 8lb
range taken this week. As the season progresses
and the evenings get shorter the Fishery is now
closing at 8.30pm. Amongst the best bags were: George Simpson, Falkirk, who had

Many anglers are visiting Swanswater very
regularly and often several times a week. One of these,
Allan McLachlan, Plean, took the biggest fish of the
week, a lovely 10lb 12oz Rainbow part of his bag
of 9 for 33lb, in three visits, which also
included 7 Blues and a Gold. Kenny
Whitehead, Helensburgh, making two visits, had 8 for
27lb 14oz including 5 Blues, biggest one at
7lb 12oz , 5lb 3oz Brown, and 2 Golds.
Derek Fowler and 13 year old grandson, Brian, from
Dunipace, shared 5 for 22lb 15oz including 7lb
3oz Rainbow for Brian and 6lb 14oz Rainbow
for Derek. Earlier in the week young Brian also
took 2 Browns for 6lb bigger one at 3lb 6oz.
Another youngster catching big fish was 13 year old
Mark Hall, Denny, fishing the small ponds with dad
Allan. They shared 3 for 11lb with Mark taking a
7lb Rainbow from the Millpond.
Some other regulars making multiple
visits and doing well were James Elliott, Stirling, who
took 9 for 28lb 8oz, in two visits, including
4lb 8oz Brown, 6 Blues, and a Gold; Frank
Barr, Falkirk, who landed 5 for 16lb including
2 Browns, bigger at 4lb, 2 Blues and a
Gold one day and 7 Blues for 19lb on another
visit; and Allan McLay, Plean, 5lb 6oz Brown on
one visit and 3 for 9lb 4oz including 2
Browns and a Blue on another.
Many of the regulars have been getting
good results using wet flies just under the surface with
the favourites being Invicta, Bibio, Bumble and Dunkeld.
Other good patterns this week included Buzzers,
Bloodworm, Damsel, Spider and Sedges.
Other good catch returns show the good
variety of fish being stocked and included: Bill Buchan, Larbert, 4 for
15lb including 2 Blues, bigger one at
6lb 12oz, and a Brown Sandy Ireland, Lochgoilhead, 5 for

The fishing improved as the week went
on and over half a ton of fish was weighed in.
Hopefully the water will soon clear after the 2
inches of rain that fell on Saturday and conditions
will continue to be good. With low water
temperatures for the time of year, the fish are more
active than normal for August especially the
Brownies. Fish are being taken on or near the
surface and this week’s favourite patterns were
Damsel, Dancer, Buzzer, Invicta, Bibio, Hare’s Ear
and Cormorant. The majority of fish being stocked
at present are top quality Blues averaging around
2lb 8oz with most of the Rainbows going in at around
4lb to 6lb. Plenty of Browns are still being taken
with their average weight around 3lb. Stuart Rutherford, Bonnyrigg, 5

A large proportion of the fish being
stocked at present are Blues, which are in superb
condition and not only look good, but also give a
tremendous fight. Rainbows, Browns and Golds are
also being stocked in good numbers but it is the
Blues which are attracting the most attention. The
fish have been just below the surface again this
week with wet flies or weighted small nymphs on a
floating line being the best tactics. Favourite
wets were Invicta, Butcher, Bibio and Kate McLaren
with Montana and Damsel the best nymphs. Fish were
also being taken on the top by Daddies, Sedges and
CDCs. Weather conditions have made things quite
difficult on occasions especially in the strong
breeze and bright sunshine. The changing conditions
from bright sun to rain in a matter of minutes have
also confused the fish at times.
Several anglers are making two or
more visits to the Fishery every week with varying
degrees of success. Two friends from Oban staying
in Stirling for the week were in fishing on five
separate occasions – one landed 21 fish and the
other 13. Allan McLachlan, Plean, made 4
visits, and took 12 for 44lb including
6lb 12oz Rainbow, 6lb 8oz Rainbow, 3 Browns and 5 Blues. Two double figure Rainbows were
landed with Ian Fisher, Denny taking the biggest
fish of the week, a cracking 11lb 13oz
Rainbow in his bag of 3 for 17lb 4oz
with also included a Blue Rab Don, Plean, took the other
double, a lovely 11lb 5oz Rainbow Peter Baird, Falkirk, 9lb 8oz

Having missed the worst of the rain,
conditions at Swanswater continue to be good. The
water temperature dropped slightly during the course
of the week but the fish are still very near the
surface and are looking for something to chase. Wet
and dry flies and small nymphs fished on floating
lines have been getting the best results, although
at times anglers were have to resort to lures to try
and annoy the fish. In general the fishing was
better when there was a light breeze, as the still,
heavy conditions tend to make the fish more
lethargic. Plenty of Goldies are being stocked
which can easily be seen in the ponds, and their
behaviour is a good indication as to what the
Rainbows and Blues are looking for. Len Boughen, Maybole, 10lb 8oz

Another mixed week with the overcast
calm mornings and bright breezy afternoons meaning
conditions were very changeable. Plenty of sport
was to be had on or near the surface with dry or wet
flies including Muddlers, Daddies and Hoppers, with
fish also taking Buzzers and a few nymphs. During
the bright spells the area near the lilies behind
the islands was quite productive as the fish were
hiding in the shade. At other times fish were
taking all round the pond with the Browns often to
be found in the area near the mouth of the burn. A
good number of Rainbows, Blues and Browns in the 4lb
8oz to 7lb range were taken this week with more
reports of bigger fish seen or lost. Charles Devine, Stirling, 3

The unsettled weather all week has
unsettled the fish and made the fishing quite hard
at times. Fishing in the evenings has been
consistently better than during the afternoons with
the fish very willing to come up to wet and dry
flies. The best wet patterns were Bibio, Black
Pennell and Kate McLaren, with Daddies, Sedges,
Klinkhammers and even size 22 Shuttlecock Buzzers
being the favourite dries. Although nothing really
big was landed there were several reports of big
fish being seen and of anglers being broken. The
dirty water from excavations upstream which affected
Swanswater last weekend has now cleared and the burn
is running clean. Kenny Spiers, Glasgow, 7lb 4oz

The fish have been in the top foot of
the water this week and have been caught in bursts
during the day with the fishing often more
consistent in the evenings. With large numbers of
sedges, midges and damsel flies around the fish are
willing to come up to take dry flies off the top or
wet flies from just under the surface. Hoppers,
Muddlers and Daddy Long Legs were the best dry
patterns with Bibio, Soldier Palmer and Black
Pennell the favourite wets. Olive Damsels were
also very successful during the day. It was another
good week for Brown trout with almost 20% of all
fish landed being Browns including some real
crackers around 4lb. No double figure fish were
landed this week but there are plenty of superb 5lb

Some superb Rainbows in the 5lb to
8lb range were landed this week along with some
cracking Browns around the 5lb mark. Fish are being
taken all over the lochs with most lying in the top
couple of feet. Wet flies, dry flies and nymphs on
a floating or intermediate line were the best
tactics with Bibio, Kate McLaren, Spiders, Muddlers,
Diawl Bach and Damsel being the favourite patterns.
The unsettled weather has made the fishing a little
more difficult some days. The water remains very
clear despite the heavy showers although the
temperature has been fluctuating with the air
temperatures. Ross Carroll, Stirling, took the
biggest fish of the week in his bag of 3 for

This week saw the best week for Browns so far this
season and the biggest one this year, 7lb 8oz,
caught by Gary Waugh of Cumbernauld. As the
week progressed and the temperatures dropped again,
the fishing in the evenings improved greatly with
some really good sport to be had later in the day.
The fish were no more than a couple of feet down in
the water and happy to come up to wet and dry flies,
with Bibio, Spider, Snatcher, Bloodworm and Buzzer
amongst the most successful patterns. Some
anglers were successful with a fast retrieve whilst
others found that a more gentle approach worked
better. The catch returns show one
double figure Rainbow landed and a number of Browns,
Blues and Rainbows in the 4lb 8oz to 7lb 8oz range
also taken. David Hill, Cambus, 10lb 7oz

The calm, clammy conditions all week meant the fish
were not far below the surface. The very
visible Goldies were causing much frustration when
they were seen to be turning away just inches away
from the fly. The Browns were looking for
something to chase and those willing to work hard at
their retrieve were rewarded by some cracking fish.
Although there were no double figure fish landed
there were a good number of Rainbows, Blues and
Browns in the 4lb 8oz to 8lb range taken. Dry
flies, including Daddy Long Legs and Muddlers, were
doing well this week, as were Bloodworm and various
small nymphs.

The fishing was definitely better this week when
there was a ripple on the water. On the really
calm days it was quite tough but as soon as a breeze
got up the fish were being taken in the top 12 to 18
inches. The good flow of water through the
fishery means that there is always plenty of oxygen
in the water and the fish are active all round the
ponds, although the Browns in particular tend to
favour the area around the mouth of the burn.
Only one double figure fish was taken this week but
there were a good number of Rainbows, Blues and
Browns in the 5lb to 6lb range. The Goldies
are already proving frustrating as the clarity of
the water means they can easily be seen and targeted
although they often turn away just before taking the
fly. Dry flies, such as Muddler, Hopper, Daddy
Long Legs and Black Spider have been very successful
this week, with the Browns preferring wet flies such
as Bibio, Kate McLaren and Diawl Bach. George

The first of this year’s Golden Trout were stocked
in the small ponds this week and 14 year old Connor
Nicol from Plean, weighed in the first one.
Over the coming weeks many more of these highly
visible fish will be stocked in Swanswater as well
as in the Mill and Meadow Ponds. Some
superb big Browns were taken from Swanswater
including three of the five biggest fish of the week
and the biggest brown of the season so far.
The fish are now very active and are taking in the
top 12 to 18 inches of the water. Many anglers
are having a lot of fun with dry flies although the
best results are still to be had using traditional
wets or nymphs fished on either a floating or
intermediate line. The Fishery is now open
until 10.00pm every evening. David Patrson,

Conditions early in the week led to some excellent
fishing although the blustery wind towards the
weekend spoilt things a little. The fish are
being taken in the top 2 feet and best results have
been intermediate lines fished with small
traditional flies. Lures and buzzers were also
taking fish although the large number of Browns
figuring in the catch returns were mostly caught on
small traditional wet flies such as Bibio, Kate
McLaren, Soldier Palmer and Black Pennel. One
double figure Rainbow was landed this week, several
Blues and Rainbows in the 5 to 8lb range and a good
number of cracking Browns, the biggest of which were

The cool east wind has kept the fish below the
surface although some have been seen moving on the
top. The water temperature has dropped a

week with some superb fish featuring in the catch
returns. Around 50 Browns over 3lbs have been
taken this week with the biggest ones well over 4lb.

The east wind most of the week tended to keep the

Three double figure Rainbows, a double figure Blue
and numerous Browns in the 3 to 6 lb range have been
taken. Damsel patterns have been working best along
with Dancers and Cat's. Bibio, Black Pennell and

Changeable weather led to changeable fishing with
conditions varying from day to day. On the
bright sunny days the best times were either early
morning or between 6.00pm and 7.00pm when the sun
was dipping behind the hill. On other days the
fish were taking at any time and there were no
particular hot spots with fish being taken all round
the ponds. Two double figure Rainbows and
several excellent rainbows, browns and blues around
the 5lb mark landed this week. Small wet
flies and nymphs fished on an intermediate line were
working well with some anglers enjoying success on

On the days when conditions were looking pretty
tough, the fishing was much better than on the days
when the wind was in the west, there was good cloud
cover and things should have been easier! Best
results were with either an intermediate line with
wet flies or nymphs, or a floating line with a
weighted lure on the point. More and more
Browns are being taken on wet flies with Bibio and
Snatcher being the best patterns. Hot-head
Damsel, Yellow Dancer and Crafteye Cat were the most
successful lures. A good variety of both size
and type of fish were landed this week with Rainbows
up to 7lb, Browns up to 5lb and some superb Blues
around the more average stocking size.
Gary Waugh, Airdrie, had a good week when in four
visits he took 14 for 47lb 2oz including

One
lucky angler, Gary Aitcheson from Glasgow, on his
first visit, caught his first ever fish on the fly –
an 8lb 6oz Blue. He had hooked and lost a
couple of fish earlier in the day and when he netted
the big one it still had his original Yellow Dancer
in its mouth! Several other fish in the 5lb to
8lb range were landed this week along with one
double figure Rainbow. Plenty of superb
Brownies feature in the returns. Although the
bright sunshine meant the fish were sometimes hard
to find those fishing deep and slow were having the
best results. The Brownies on the other hand
are looking for something to chase and many anglers
are getting followed right in to the bank with fish
taking very close in. Damsel, Dancer,
Bloodworm, Buzzers and Bibio were the most
successful patterns, with the Browns taking much the
same lures as the Rainbows.
Mick
Dempster, Balloch, took the biggest fish of the week
in his bag of 3 for 15lb 12oz including
11lb Rainbow Sandy Donald, Dunblane, had a good

The beautiful bright sunshine and the sudden rise
in air temperatures were welcomed by the anglers
although the fish were not so happy and preferred to
hide in the depths. On Friday, when there was
much more cloud cover, there was some tremendous
fishing with over 120 fish landed on the day.
Several superb Browns and Blues figure in this
week’s returns with Browns up to 4lb appearing
frequently. One double figure Rainbow and two
just under the 10lb mark were also taken this week.
On the bright days something with some sparkle
through it fished slow and deep was the most
effective method with Damsel, Dancer, Nomad
and various Fritz patterns working best.
Favourite colours this week were black and green,
yellow or white. When the sun went behind the
clouds the fish were coming up to a wide variety of
patterns including nymphs such as PTN and Hare’s Ear
and wet flies. Peter Humphrey, Livingston,
took the biggest fish of the week in his 3 for 20lb
4oz including 11lb 12oz Rainbow Brian Sutherland,
Kirkcaldy, had a good day’s sport with the best bag
this week of 5 for 25lb 4oz including Rainbows at 9b
10oz and 6lb 12oz Other good bags included
John Watson, Bo’ness, 4 for 16lb 2oz including 9lb
4oz Rainbow Richard Elder, Glasgow, 3 for 17lb 12oz
including Rainbows at 6lb 12oz and 5lb 14oz and 5lb

Some superb Rainbows and Blues in the 5lb to 7lb
range were landed at Swanswater this week as well as
several Browns in the 3lb to 6lb range,
including the biggest of the season so far at 6lb
1oz. Two double figure Rainbows were also taken.
Several young anglers figure in the good bags this
week with some big fish also coming off the small
ponds. On the really bright days, the fish
were deep and somewhat hard to come by, but on the
more overcast days the fishing was easier with fish
moving all over the water. Damsel, Dancer,
Montana and Cat’s Whisker were the favourite lures,
with Buzzer and Bloodworm also catching, and wet
flies such as Whisky fly and Soldier Palmer also
successful. Davy Quinn,
Dunfermline, took the biggest fish of the week in
his 2 for 14lb 8oz including 11lb 12oz Rainbow Clint
Doig, Bridgeness AC, also had a double in his 3 for
16lb 8oz including 11lb 2oz Rainbow Other good bags
