A good week's fishing at Swanswater despite the bright sunshine, warm days and cool nights.  Fish were being caught all round the ponds with, on Swanswater, the main area doing best in the mornings with the fish moving into the shallower water behind the islands later in the day.  Although there is not a lot of top of the water action yet, the fish are not deep and floating lines with weighted nymphs or small lures are doing best.  Damsel, Dancer and Cat's Whisker remain the favourite patterns, with Diawl Bach, Hare's Ear and Buzzers also doing well.  Yellow and Black and Green have been the best colours.  Brown Trout continue to figure prominently in the catch returns with some lovely specimens being taken.  A few good sized Blues also feature this week. Some of the week's best bags were: James Davitt, Stirling, 5 for 19lb including 6lb 13oz Brown Allan McLay and Aileen Brown, Plean, shared 7 for 19lb 8oz including 3 Browns, 2 Blues and 2 Golds. Brown trout were to the fore in the catch returns at Swanswater this week especially big browns.   The warmer weather seems to have encouraged them to move about and they are definitely looking for something to chase.  Lures such as Yellow Dancer, Hot-head Damsel, Viva and Cat's Whisker are still the best patterns with Cormorant, Diawl Bach and Buzzers also doing well.  Rab Don, one of our regular anglers, landed his third Brown over 5lb 8oz this season when he took a cracking 7lb 6oz specimen.  One double figure Rainbow was landed along with some superb Blues, Golds and a lovely 5lb 12oz Tiger Biggest fish of the week was a 13lb 12oz Rainbow landed by Dave Grierson, Edinburgh, in his bag of 3 for 19lb 6oz. The great variety of fish at Swanswater continues to keep the anglers guessing as to what they will catch next.  Browns, Blues and Golds figure prominently in the catch returns alongside the usual excellent quality Rainbows.  Although the fish have been deeper in the water on brighter days with mainly lures, predominantly white and yellow patterns, catching, some anglers have been keen to try dry flies in the duller conditions with some good results.  Buzzers and some small nymphs have also been successful.   As the evenings get lighter the fishery hours have been extended and closing time is now 9.00pm. A selection of good bags this week included : Grant McCauley, Clydebank, 5 for 19lb including 5lb 8oz Blue and a Gold Paul Christie, Alloa, 7 for 21lb 8oz including 2 Blues Tam Anderson, Kincardine, 3 for 9lb 12oz including 3lb 12oz Brown Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 14lb 8oz Bill Penman, Dunfermline, 4 for 12lb 4oz including a Blue Gerrard Dawson, Stirling, 3 for 8lb 14oz including a Gold Colin Biggar, Clydebank, 2 for 6lb including a Blue Sandy Bonella, Alloa, 3 for 9lb 12oz Davy Thomson, Alva, 5for  14lb 10oz including a Gold r Cameron Weymes, Eaglesham, 4 for 10 including 2 Browns Husband and wife, Stephen and Claire Hamilton, Glenochil, had 2 Blues and a  Brown in their 4 for 10lb 4oz Alec Paterson, Sauchie, 2 for 6lb 8oz Colin Geddes, Laurieston, 5 for 14lb 6oz Peter Mutch, Stirling, 3 for 9lb Jim Denny, Dunipace, 3 for9lb including a Brown Anthony Sephton, Stirling, 3 for 10lb 10oz including 5lb 10oz Blue Sandy Jenkins, Carronshore, 4 for 12lb including a Blue and a Gold

Another excellent week’s fishing at Swanswater with almost 500 fish caught on the three ponds.  Water temperature has only just reached 10C so small lures are still working best with Cat’s Whisker, Damsel and Dancer the favourite patterns.  On the small ponds the fish are coming up to dry flies and nymphs when the conditions are right.  A number of fish in the 5lb to 8lb range, of all varieties were taken along with one double figure Rainbow and another weighing in at just under 10lb.  Several Goldies are being stocked in all three ponds and are causing a certain amount of frustration by being seen cruising round the water and not always showing any interest in what is being offered to them. Jim Muir, Carlisle, had the biggest fish of the week with a 13lb 2oz Rainbow.    Local angler Ronnie Loos had a very successful week taking 24 for 75lb 1oz including Rainbows at 9lb 9oz and 5lb, 4 Golds and 2 Blues in 6 visits. Other good bags include  David Robertson, West Calder, 5 for 18lb 8oz including 7lb7oz Brown David Wales, South Queensferry, 4 for 15lb including 7lb Gold Donnie Paton, Dundee, 2 for 10lb 6oz, including 7lb Rainbow Frank Barr, Falkirk, 5 for 17lb including 5lb 10oz Blue Geoff Gilbert, Isle of Man, 10 for 30lb including 2 Browns bigger one at 5lb.  Father and son, Jim and Jim Anderson, Carstairs, shared 9 for 26lb Richard Elder, Glasgow, 3 for 11lb including 5lb Blue and 2 Browns, bigger one at 3lb 14oz Rab Nimmo, Stirling, 3 for 9lb 12oz including 5lb 4oz Rainbow and 2 Browns Bob Garvie, Lennoxtown, 3 for 9lb 12oz Harry Peattie, Stirling, 3 for 9lb 8oz Iain McDonald, Stirling, 3 for 9lb including a Blue Robert Getty, Milngavie, 2 for 7lb including 4lb 8oz Blue Peter Miller, Alva, 2 for 6lb 8oz Jimmy Agnew, Stirling, 2 for 6lb 4oz Jim Allan, Kilsyth, 2 for 6lb 4oz Joe Corr, Alloa, 5lb 2oz Blue

The strong cool winds and blustery showers made casting tricky at Swanswater this week but despite the conditions plenty of good bags were taken, made up from the usual variety of top quality Rainbows, Blues, Browns and Golds.  Favourite flies included Damsel, Dancer, Montana, Diawl Bach, and Buzzzer.  The small ponds fished exceedingly well and proved very popular this week due to the fact that they are more sheltered from the wind than the main water.  Here dry flies, sedges and nymphs were taking fish with the Goldies showing a lot of interest in anything large fished on the surface. Allan McLay, Plean, took the biggest fish of the week with a Rainbow at 11lb 11oz in his bag of 3 for 16lb 12oz, which also included a Blue and a Brown  Craig Kilgour, Stenhousemuir, 2 for 9lb including 6lb 9oz Gold Sandy Jenkins, Carronshore, 4 for 13lb including 5lb 2oz Blue James Davitt, Stirling, fishing the Mill and Meadow Ponds, took 20 for 47lb including 7 Golds in 4 visits and had a further 19 on C&R Ronnie Loos, Stirling, in 6 visits took 21 for 57lb 4oz Geoff Gilbert, Isle of Man, in 4 visits, 10 for 32lb Alec Neil, Alva, 5lb 8oz Brown 8 members of  Change Fly Fishers, Edinburgh, had a good outing taking 27 for 76lb 2oz with David Bertram having the best bag at 4 for 12lb 6oz and George Brown the biggest fish, a Blue at 4lb 4oz  Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 15lb  Sean Cochrane, Cumbernauld, 5 for 14lb 2oz including a Blue Gary McDonald, Tillicoultry, 5 for 14lb including a Blue and a Gold Kenny Whitehead, Helensburgh, 5 for 13lb 10oz including 3lb 8oz Brown and 3 Golds Bob Fleming, Leslie, 3 for 10lb including 4lb 4oz Blue Harry Peattie, Stirling, 3 for 9lb 8oz  Derek Sharkey, Fishcross, 3 for 9lb 6oz  Ian Welsh, Sauchie, 3 for 9lb 4oz Alan Thomson, 3 for 9lb including a Brown Stuart Guthrie, Perth, 2 for 7lb 4oz including 4lb 2oz Brown Anthony Sephton, Stirling, 2 for 7lb including 4lb 14oz Blue Sandy Donald, Dunblane, 2 for 6lb including a Blue Davy Thomson, Alva, 2 Browns for 5lb  Alan McMahon, Glasgow 4 for 10lb 12oz  David Mitchell, Stirling, had 2 Browns in his 4 for 10lb 12oz

Some superb Browns featured in this week’s catch returns at Swanswater with several in the 3lb 8oz to 6lb range being landed along with a good number of the more normal 2lb to 3lb size.  Like the Rainbows and Blues, the Browns are still taking mostly lures, Damsel, Dancer, Cat’s Whisker, Viva, with a few being caught on Diawl Bach, PTN or Buzzers.  The recent cold snap has led to a drop in water temperature although the fish are still sitting in the top 4 feet of the water. The Troutmasters fish-off last Sunday was won by Duncan Dennett, Alloa, who now goes forward to represent Swanswater at the final at Grafham in May.  Runner-up was Peter Bryce, Alloa, with Sandy Ireland, Lochgoilhead, in third place.  Tam Anderson, Kincardine, took the prize fort the heaviest fish with a 4lb 12oz Blue. A really good week’s fishing at Swanswater despite the heavy rain and coloured water. On the days when there was clear water coming in down the burn, a large number of fish were landed.  This week’s biggest fish was a 9lb 8oz Brown landed by Andy Wilson, Tillicoultry, which had been in the water since last season.  This cracking over-wintered fish fell to a white fritz.  Fritz patterns were the favourite this week with orange, pink, green and white all doing well.  Other successful patterns were Viva, Dancer, Bibio, and Buzzer. Some of the week's best bags included: Andy Wilson, Tillicoultry, 3 for 14lb 4oz including 9lb 8oz Brown  Ronnie Loos, Stirling, in 5 visits, 17 for 49lb 14oz, including 2 Browns bigger one at 5lb 4oz, a Blue and a Gold Peter Mutch, Stirling, in two visits, 10 for 29lb 8oz including 5lb 4oz Blue and 3 Golds Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 14lb 8oz including 2 Blues DerekCowan, Carronshore, 5 for 14lb 4oz including a Blue Archie McClymont, Glasgow, 5 for 13lb 8oz including 2 Browns Tam Anderson, Kincardine, 4 for 14lb including 4lb 8oz Brown and a Blue Stephen Anderson, Glenrothes, 4 for 11lb 4oz including a Brown and a Blue Sandy Bonella, Menstrie, 4 for 11lb 4oz including a Gold Liam Kilgannon, Bannockburn, 3 for 10lb 4oz including 5lb Brown and a Blue Michael Bolton, 3 for 9lb 8oz including 4lb 4oz Blue Sandy Donald, Dunblane, 3 for 9lb 4oz  Ruardie Sutherland, Glenrothes, 2 for 8lb 8oz including 5lb 8oz Brown Rab Nimmo, Stirling, 2 for 8lb including 5lb 10oz Brown and a Gold Peter Bryce, Alloa, 2 for 6lb 4oz including a Blue Kenny Spiers, Glasgow, 2 for 6lb 8oz including 4lb Blue Peter Davison, Glasgow, 5lb 11oz Blue

Visiting anglers from Iceland and the USA gave Swanswater an international flavour this week.  There was also plenty of colour in the bag as Golds, Blues and Browns featured alongside the Rainbows in the catch returns.  2 double figure Rainbows were landed along with several fish in the 4lb to 6lb range, of all varieties.  Lures, fished in the top 4 feet of the water was the best tactic for Swanswater, with nymphs and buzzers doing well on the small ponds.  Some days the fish were concentrated in the area behind the islands but for most of the week they were well spread out and being caught all round.Iain Watson, Alexandria, 4 for 21lb 4oz including 12lb Rainbow. Since the snow at the beginning of the week, all three ponds have fished very well with Saturday being exceptionally good.  Just one Brown was taken on the first day of the season, but since then several have been landed with the biggest to date a cracking 5lb 8oz.  A good number of golds and blues have also been adding colour to anglers’ bags.  Cat’s Whisker, Yellow Dancer, Damsel and Buzzers have been the best patterns with Black and Green the favourite colours.  Biggest fish this week was a superb 13lb 5oz Rainbow. SANA Ladies held a fundraising competition on Saturday and raised over £1100.  Despite the bitterly cold weather some excellent bags were landed with the competition being won by Kevin McCabe with 5 fish for 12lb 14oz.  John Ross was runner up and Ian Skilling third.  The biggest fish of the day, and the week was a 12lb 13oz Rainbow landed by Sandy Ireland.  Due to a capping rule in the competition this specimen only counted as 4lb towards Sandy's bag.   Young Marcus McVey also landed a double figure Rainbow during the competition with one at 11lb 8oz.    During the rest of the week the fishing was fairly consistent despite the changeable weather.  Green, Black and Yellow are the favourite colours at present with the usual lure patterns still the most popular for catching fish.  The present cold snap has sent the fish deeper than they have been all winter with the majority sitting around 6-8 feet down. Some of this week's best bags included:S andy Ireland,

The fishing at the start of the week was very good but as the temperature dropped, so did the fish and they became a bit harder to locate.  By the weekend the ponds would have been frozen over but the aerators did their job and kept large areas ice free.  All the ponds continue to produce excellent bags of top quality fish.  The favourite patterns are still Cat’s Whisker, Dancer, and Damsel, with various Fritz patterns also doing well especially anything Black and Green. Some of the week’s best bags included:

Alex Campbell, Clackmannan, 3 for 12lb 4oz from the Millpond, including 8lb

The fishing remained good but challenging this week due to the changing temperatures as the fish continued to shoal together, moving around the whole of the pond. Anglers who have located the shoals, still in the top few feet of water, have landed fish on Cats Whisker, Yellow Dancer, Ace of Spades, Black and Green Fritz, Damsel and Tadpole. Later in the week fish were being taken on Buzzer and Bloodworm.

After the heavy rain midweek, conditions became more settled and the fishing continued to be good with anglers enjoying some great sport in the almost spring-like weather.   The small ponds have been particularly productive this week with the Goldies providing a great deal of entertainment.  The same flies as have been taking all winter are still working well with the favourites being Dancer, Damsel, Buzzer and Bloodworm.  One double figure Rainbow was landed this week as well as a beautiful Tiger weighing in at just under 6lb.  The Tiger was in superb condition having been in the water for an estimated 10-12 months. Ken Skilling, Shotts, 3 for 16lb 12oz including 10lb 12oz Rainbow Sandy Ireland, Lochgoilhead, 5 for 16lb 6oz including a Blue Alex Wilkie, Coatbridge, 5 for 15lb 8oz Greg Pryce, Cambridge, 5 for 14lb 8oz including 2 Blues Jim Allan, Kilsyth, 6 for 16lb 8oz  Malcolm Kerr, Clydebank, 4 for 12lb 8oz Ian Fraser, Bonnybridge, 4 for 12lb 4oz including a Blue Darren Handy, Bo’ness, 4 for 12lb from the Meadow Pond including a 4lb Blue Gary McDonald, Tullibody, 3 for  11lb 12oz  Alex Neil, Menstrie, 3 for 9lb 8oz David Stewart, Clydebank, 3 for 9lb 4oz John Smith, Dunfermline, 3 for 9lb including a Blue Ross Carroll, Stirling, 2 for 9lb 8oz including 6lb 4oz Rainbow George Gillon, Uphall, 2 for 8lb 4oz including 5lb 14oz Tiger Jim Dougall, Kincardine, 2 for 7lb 4oz including a Blue Archie McClymont, Glasgow, 2 for 6lb 12oz John Stevenson, Stirling, 2 for 6lb 8oz  including a Blue John Mathieson, Doune, 5lb 4oz Blue

As the water temperature varied through the week so the fish moved around the pond with any rises in temperature seeing them at the top end behind the islands and on the colder days they were in the main area of Swanswater.   Most are still being caught in the top 4 feet of the water and the patterns which have been popular all winter - Damsel, Dancer, Cat's Whisker, Buzzer and Bloodworm - continue to be the most successful.  On the milder days, one or two anglers were tempted to try small wet and dry flies as the fish could be seen coming up to take small black flies on the surface of the water.  One double figure Rainbow was landed in addition to a couple of cracking 7lb Blues. A new record was set this week for the biggest Golden Trout landed at Swanswater when Colin Binnie, Bonnybridge, took a beautiful specimen at 7lb 7oz.  In general the fishing has continued to be good with the fish still in the top 4 feet of the water except during the bright spells when they tended to go down a bit deeper.  Some days the fishing was exceptionally good with Tuesday particularly good.  This week’s favourite patterns were the usual lures – Dancer and Damsel, and with the fish looking for something to chase, a medium fast retrieve was the best tactic.George Garfoot, Rosneath, 2 for 11lb 8oz including 9lb Rainbow Harry Seton, Duntocher, 5 for 21lb 2oz including 2 Blues, bigger at 8lb 10oz Alec Paterson, Sauchie, 6 for 17lb 4oz including 2 Blues Ian Whitelaw, 5 for 15lb 8oz including 2 Blues Sandy Ireland, Lochgoilhead, 5 for 14lb 12oz including a Blue Grant McCauley, Duntocher, 5 for 14lb 2oz including a Gold and a Blue Peter Ferrier, Clydebank, 5 for 14lb 2oz  Colin Binnie, Bonnybridge, 4 for 16lb 8oz including 7lb 7oz Gold Ian Linton, Kirkcaldy, 4 for 14lb 8oz including 5lb 10oz Gold Fraser McIntosh, Gairloch, 4 for 13lb 8oz Sandy Jenkins, Carronshore, 4 for 12lb 13oz including 4lb 10oz Rainbow Willie McLean, Muirhead, 4 for 12lb 12oz including 4lb 10oz Rainbow Sandy Bonella, Menstrie, 3 for 9lb 8oz including 4lb 4oz Rainbow Jim Allan, Kilsyth, 2 for 7lb 6oz Jim Stewart 3 for 9lb A Flockhart 5lb Gold

Early in the week the fish in Swanswater were concentrated in the channel off the island and up the roadside, but as the week went on they spread out and were caught all round the pond.  Depth rather than location or fly seemed to be important with the fish lying 3 feet to 4 feet deep.  Favourite patterns were Dancer, Damsel, Hare's Ear PTN, Bloodworm, Buzzer, Ace of Spades and Kate McLaren.  Two double figure Rainbows were landed this week amongst the 1000lbs of fish taken.  The exceptionally high quality of fish is still drawing comments from anglers. Aerators kept the ponds ice free at the end of the week and the cold snap certainly got the big fish moving.  Despite the drop in temperature the fish were not deep and floating lines were doing better than intermediates for most of the week.  The fish moved during the week and the hotspots varied between the far bay and the roadside area.  At least 20 fish weighing 5lb or more were landed this week including 5 double figure Rainbows. Here is a selection of the best catches - there were several other great bags, but there is not room to list them all: James Wilson, Coatbridge, 4 for 21lb 10oz including 13lb 3oz Rainbow Allan Mitchell, Stirling, 5 for 24lb 8oz including 11lb1 5oz Rainbow and a Blue Chris Perry, Menstrie, 4 for 21lb 12oz including 11lb 8oz Rainbow and a Blue Sandy McLaren, Perth, fishing with son Greg, 5 for 20lb 4oz including 10lb 4oz Rainbow and 2 Blues Mike Reid, Flakirk, 3 for 15lb 12oz including 10lb 4oz Rainbow Grant McCauley, Duntocher, in 4 visits, 20 for 64lb 8oz, including 10 Blues biggest one at 6lb 4oz Peter Mutch, Stirling, 10 for 32lb 4oz including 4lb 10oz Rainbow in three visits Davy Thomson, Alva, 8 for 28lb, in two visits, including 5lb 8oz Rainbow and a Blue Ken Skilling, Shotts, 5 for 19lb 10oz including 8lb 2oz Rainbow Peter Ferrier, Clydebank, 5 for 19lb 8oz including 2 Blues, bigger one at 7lb 12oz David Anderson, Menstrie, 5 for 18lb 6oz including 8lb 2oz Blue Adam Cormack, Edinburgh, 5 for 17lb 4oz Robert Bell, Falkirk, 4 for 18lb 14oz including 8lb 12oz Blue Alec Paterson, Sauchie, 4 for 16lb 8oz including 3 Blues, biggest one at 8lb 8oz Mark O’Neill, Alexandria, 4 for 16lb 8oz including 2 Blues, bigger one at 8lb Kenny Spiers, Glasgow, 4 for14lb 8oz including 5lb 8oz Gold Sandy Jenkins, Carronshore, 8 for 27lb 8oz in two visits including a Blue and a Gold John Knox, Cowdenbeath, 3 for 12lb 8oz including 2 Blues bigger one at 7lb  Gary McDonald, Tillicoultry, 3 for 11lb 15oz Robert Ross, Edinburgh, 3 for 10lb 12oz Kevin Borthwick, Powmill, 2 for 11lb 8oz including 8lb 12oz Blue  Andy Henderson, Glasgow, 2 Blues for 10lb bigger one at 7lb Scott Douglas, Whins of Milton, 2 for 9lb 12oz including 7lb 12oz Blue Angus Auchinachie, Falkirk, 2 for 7lb Fifteen year old Robert McLean, Stirling, 8lb 12oz Rainbow

All three ponds are fishing well at present and producing some superb quality fish.  The Blues, in particular, are giving an excellent account of themselves and are providing the anglers with some tremendous sport.  In general the fish have been in the top 2 to 3 feet of the water and taking a wide variety of flies.  On Swanswater, Damsel, Dancer, Cat's Whisker, PTN, Hare's Ear and Buzzers have been the favourites, whilst wet flies, such as Invicta and Wickham's, and occasional dries including Hoppers and CDC have been performing well on the Mill and Meadow Ponds.  Entries are still being taken for the sponsored competition on 30th October to help raise funds for the Scottish International Disabled Angling Team. The fishing continues to improve as water temperatures drop slightly.  Sunday was the best day for several weeks apart from a spell in the afternoon when the bright sun put the fish off.  The most productive areas were round the islands where the fresh water coming down the burn attracted a large number of big blues and browns.  The fish were mostly taking nymphs in the top couple of feet of water with a few caught on dries in the evenings.  Best patterns were Damsel, Hare’s Ear, Diawl Bach and Montana with Olive Damsel the best all round fly. A hard and frustrating week at Swanswater (for both management and fishers) due to exceptionally high temperatures and the resulting low water oxygen levels.  Fish are still being seen cruising around the ponds but are proving hard to catch.  The Golds continue to provide great sport as they are very visible and anglers in the boats tell of getting splashed by the Browns jumping around them.  Some anglers who made more than one visit to the fishery this week did very well and were rewarded for their perseverance.  Damsel and Buzzers were the best patterns this week with the fish that were caught taking at all depths, with a few being taken on various dry flies.Grant McCauley, Duntocher, in two visits, 12 for 38lb 6oz including 6lb Blue and 2 Golds. Martin  Britton, Scarborough, on holiday for 4 days, 5 for 24lb 14oz including 7lb 4oz Blue, 7lb 1oz Rainbow and 4lb Gold from Swanswater and 6 for 13lb 8oz from the Meadow Pond including 3lb 5oz Rainbow. With the water temperature sitting around 16º-17º the fish are proving relatively hard to catch.  They are being seen cruising around the ponds and following flies but not taking which is proving frustrating both to anglers and the management.
